Our take on sustainability

#

Safety is an environmental issue

Our common ambition is to create more sustainable shipping. This mindset applies to all our areas of business and throughout our organisation. Concern for the environment, in combination with extremely competitive transport economy and a maximum of safety, are the entrance tickets to new markets and new business opportunities. At sea, safety is ultimately an environmental issue.

Clean Innovation Award

The Clean Innovation Award winner 2009 was Stena Bulk, in recognition of exceptional efforts to develop new products and services, like the Stena E-MAXair, that contribute to the environmental performance of the world’s merchant fleet. The Stena E-MAXair gas-electric driven chemical tanker project utilizes features such as an unconventional forward body design and strategic use of air cavities, translating into an estimated total reduction of COx emissions of 35 to 40 per cent.

Sustainable knowledge

Stena have jointly agreed to sponsor the Admiral Makarov State Maritime Academy in St. Petersburg in order to secure a steady supply of talented young officers. Stena already has an existing cooperation with Chalmers Lindholmen Maritime School in Gothenburg, and all parties have now agreed to work towards a closer integration between these education centers. The support for the Admiral Makarov State Maritime Academy will primarily go towards the creation of an ice-training centre and existing training programs. The sponsorship is a continuation of Sovcomflot’s long term support of the Admiral Makarov State Maritime Academy.
Dan-Sten Olsson, CEO of Stena, comments; “Our objective of providing ever safer tanker transportation is clearly visible of our new building program. We have a special focus on ice traffic in our home waters. We want to show our commitment to the Baltic region by teaming up with Sovcomflot to secure the stable supply of well educated and trained officers and crews for our tankers.”

Social responsibility

For an international company like ours, sponsorship is also an opportunity to contribute to the development of our home region, Gothenburg. We do this through involvement in selected sporting events and courses of study. The aim is to do something positive for the young people in the region, many of whom are potential future employees of our group of companies.
